  Mel Toomey, DHL (Honorary)
Resident Scholar 

Biography

Mel Toomey is the founder of Generative Leadership Group (GLG), an internationally recognized consulting and advisory services firm. At GLG, Mel works with executives who are committed to developing breakthrough as a strategic advantage. Much of his current work centers on documenting the source of extraordinary results. Today he is best known for his work in integrating organizational change, leader development, and executive coaching. Mel holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for his contributions to establishing leadership as a profession. He serves as Scholar in Residence at TGI, where he works to advance his methodology for rapid leader development. In addition to serving as a principal designer for the MA in Organizational Leadership, Mel is also co-designer of the first certificate program in the emerging field of leadership, faith and spirituality sponsored by the Tyson Center for Faith and Spirituality in the Workplace, University of Arkansas, Sam Walton School of Business. Mel is the founder of The Center for Leadership Studies, which provides research, development and program material for degree and certification programs. He is convinced that the notion that leadership is a quality that some of us are born with – and others are not – is unsupportable and very disempowering. Mel believes that anyone who commits to his or her own personal development can become a highly effective leader.


  Judith Hackman, PhD

Biography

Judith Dozier Hackman received her PhD in Higher Education Research and Administration (Psychology cognate, Best Dissertation award) from the University of Michigan, her M.S. in Educational Research (Outstanding Alumnus award) from Southern Connecticut State University, and her B.A. with honors in Liberal Arts and Sciences, major in Social Studies, and minor in Mathematics from the University of Illinois. She also studied at Harvard University, MacMurray College, and Yale University and received a Certificate in Coaching from Columbia Teachers College. Judith had a 44-year career at Yale University serving as Associate Dean of Yale College for Administration and for Assessment, as Director of the Yale Graduate School Teaching Fellow Program, as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, as Director of Institutional Research, and as NEASC Liaison Officer. She also taught high school history. Judith has served as Chair of several boards (Association for the Study of Higher Education, North East Association for Institutional Research, Greater New Haven Community Loan Fund, Church of Christ in Yale), as Vice Chair (MacMurray College, United Way of Greater New Haven), and as a Board Director.

  Al Bhatt, MA

Biography

As a Principal of The Center for Leadership Studies, and Managing Director of its Advisory Services & Dialogue Bureau divisions, Al Bhatt supports senior executives in navigating the personal and interpersonal challenges of facilitating business breakthroughs and integrating systemic change. He engages with leaders and executive teams, primarily through one-on-one and small group interactions, across multiple industries and geographies in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Al has previously been a Director in a multinational Publishing firm, an SVP and Practice Leader in a global consulting firm and was the founder of Koanetic Consulting International, a consultancy founded on the principle that deep expertise, rigorous methodology and crystal clear problem-solving are simply not enough to address the needs of the 21st century business environment. Al has designed CLS Advisory Services not as a traditional consultancy – with emphasis on content, expertise and methodology – but rather from the perspective that mastery of Context, Conversation and Commitment are the bedrock of 21st century leadership. In addition to his Advisory and Dialogue work, Al is an educator in the Graduate Psychology Department at the University of New Haven where he teaches Leadership, Organizational Development, and Communication & Opinion Change. He earned his Master of Arts in Organizational Psychology and Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

 

Sandra Rodegher, PhD
Program Coordinator

Biography

Sandra is a Senior Sustainability Scientist and Lecturer at Arizona State University. In her current role, she created and facilitated an international fellowship program for science museum professionals and has also led workshops and trainings around the world. In the first year of the program, she has trained over 300 science museum professionals and partnered with over 50 museums. She has a Ph.D. in Sustainability from Arizona State University and an M.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from University of New Haven. Prior to starting her doctoral program, she assisted in forming Yale University’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. 

Within the OL program, Sandra provides oversight for individual student assignments as well as overall progress towards graduation requirements, and lectures on the intersection of sustainability, systems thinking, and organizational leadership.

Danielle Frankel, MA
Biography

Danielle holds a Master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and has extensive experience providing business leaders with guidance and implementation strategies to help global organizations manage complex changes. After leaving PwC, the second largest professional services firm in the world, in 2015, Danielle founded her own consulting company working primarily with non-profit organizations and those seeking to create positive social impact. She also works with student groups as a facilitator and mentor, and is a regular guest lecturer at the University of New Haven.

Within the Organizational Leadership program at The Graduate Institute, Danielle lectures on the intersection of social justice and human development.

Wendy Appel, MA
Biography

Wendy Appel holds a Master’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology, and she’s masterful at meeting cross-cultural challenges. She offers a depth and breadth of experience that forwards understanding and transformation of cross-cultural change. Wendy is particularly astute at working with the dynamics of individual and team behavior. She understands leadership from both the inside (the individual experience) and the outside (how one is seen in the world). She is also known for her ability to quickly build trust with individuals and teams, thus accelerating their development. Descriptive titles for her work include coach for leaders and teams, consultant, thought partner, facilitator and author. Among her many accomplishments, Wendy has written a five-star rated book for leaders and teams. InsideOut Enneagram: The Game-Changing Guide for Leaders, takes complex theories of personality and behavior and puts them into action in ways that open and accelerate access to effective leadership and team interactions. Daryl Conner, MA

Daryl R. Conner is chairman and co-founder of Conner Partners®, an Atlanta-based consulting firm that specializes in strategy execution. He is an internationally recognized leader in organizational change and serves as an advisor and mentor to senior executives around the globe. He founded ODR®, a training and consulting firm specializing in large-scale organizational change, in 1974. In 2004, he re-launched the company as Conner Partners, incorporating ODR’s tools and methodologies into a larger strategy execution framework called Execution Engineering™. In more than 30 years of practice, Daryl has worked with many of the most successful organizations in the world, including Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, and non-profit institutions, to help them achieve the full intent of their most urgent and critically important initiatives. A dynamic public speaker, he has addressed thousands of executives in corporate settings, national conferences, and public programs. Daryl’s work is built on a strong foundation of research, extensive consulting experience, and a deep spiritual focus. TGI offers the first and only Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership in Connecticut. Our unique program approaches leadership as both an art and a science.

The Organizational Leadership faculty includes consultants to some of the world’s largest companies, as well as some of the best known change management and team building experts across the globe. Together, they work with TGI students to help each student identify, define, and achieve their vision of leadership—in the community, on the job, or even at home.

Students design and execute individualized “breakthrough” projects, often to astounding results. Past projects have included establishing a network of healthcare clinics in Haiti, founding a not-for-profit insurance company with a charitable aim, creating partnerships and alliances among local educational districts and state agencies, and a number of other initiatives that have generated revenues and cost savings in the millions of dollars.

But the real value of this program can’t be measured in dollars and cents. It’s in the personal and professional development of each of our students and alumni, who are committed to making leadership part of their capacity and whose leadership is actively making a difference in the world we live in.

The program utilizes an integrated curriculum, where course content is delivered across each of the program’s various class sessions. Classes meet on-site one weekend per month (Friday from 5 to 9 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm) and for one full week (Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm) in each of two summers. The degree is completed in 24 months.

In addition, you will engage in a self-selected mentorship and complete a “breakthrough project” for the culmination of your studies.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition for Master of Arts Degree Programs

Total tuition for each 36-credit MA program is $15,408, at $428 per credit. A one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $60 – and a program fee of $385 – are also required. The graduation fee is $90.

After paying the application fee of $60, MA students pay a deposit of $483 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 20 monthly payments of $770, which includes the program fee of $385 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $15,943.

Tuition for Certificate Programs

Tuition for certificate programs is $428 per credit. A one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $60 – and a program fee of $195 – are also required. The graduation fee is $90.

After paying the $60 Application fee, Certificate students pay as follows:

12-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $521 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 7 monthly payments of $700, which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $5,481. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $1,222 in the 8th month, followed by 12 monthly payments of $770. (Certificates in Ecotherapy, Applied Storytelling, and Positive Psychology)

11-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $793 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 6 monthly payments of $700 which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $5,053. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $880 in the 7th month, followed by 13 monthly payments of $770. (Certificate in Integrative Energy and Eastern Medicine)

9-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $637 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 5 monthly payments of $700 which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $4,197. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $966 in the 6th month, followed by 14 monthly payments of $770. (Certificate in Integrative Health and Healing)

6-Credit Certificate Program students pay a deposit of $753 upon acceptance or conditional acceptance to the program. Students then make 3 monthly payments of $700 which includes the program fee of $195 and the graduation fee of $90. The total of all tuition and fees is $2,913. If the student decides to matriculate to an MA program, the student will pay $710 in the 4th month, followed by 16 monthly payments of $770. (Certificate in Consciousness, Transformation and Mindfulness)

Tuition for Coaching Program

Tuition for the Transformative Coaching program is $ 3,168 which includes three one-on-one mentor coaching sessions with Guthrie Sayen, PCC. 

A one-time, non-refundable, application fee of $60 is also required. 

Students pay a deposit of $918 after acceptance to the program. Students then make 3 monthly payments of $750.

In addition, Non-TGI costs associated with the acquisition of the ICF ACC coaching credential are:

  ICF membership dues paid directly to the ICF $245
  ICF exam fee, member rate, paid directly to the ICF $300

NOTE: Admission to the Transformative Coach Training program only requires a completed Application form, the application fee of $60, and Proof of Immunization.

Enrollment Dates

All of The Graduate Institute's programs operate via a cohort model, which means you will join a group of approximately 12-15 students and complete the entire program of study as a cohesive learning community. We are continually starting new cohorts as existing cohorts become filled. 

Most of our programs begin in the fall (September/October), although certain Master of Arts degrees and certificate programs are also available in the spring (April/May) of each year. Please check back frequently for new cohort start dates.

Student Loan Opportunities

Students may apply for Connecticut state loans through the Connecticut Higher Education Supplemental Loan Authority (CHESLA), which offers low-fixed-interest-rate loans, with no application fees. Applicants – or co-applicants, if any – must have a minimum $20,000 gross annual income, and monthly loan installment payments must amount to 40% or less of monthly gross income. Students may defer interest while in school and for a 6-month grace period (interest is capitalized annually). The CALS Graduate Institute School Code is 117777-00. Alumni Partial Tuition Waiver 

An alumnus of any of The Graduate Institute's Master of Arts degree programs qualifies for a partial tuition waiver of $2,000 towards another MA degree, or $1,000 towards a Certificate program, or $300 towards the TCT coaching program. 

Tuition Waiver for Six Credits for Educators

Applicants for the spring of 2017 for MA degrees who teach full time in Priority and Alliance School Districts* are eligible for a $2,568 tuition waiver.

Tuition Waiver for up to Six Credits for an MA Program

Master of Arts students may apply for a tuition waiver for up to six (6) credits if they show evidence (official transcript) for credits of graduate study as a non-matriculated student. Requests for this tuition waiver are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The Academic Affairs Committee renders all decisions regarding transfer of credit.  

Need-Based Scholarship

Need-based scholarships are available to eligible candidates who have financial hardship and can provide documentation (most recent tax return and asset statement) to support their need.
